What is Rhino Shield – Pros and Cons with Estimate Prices (1)

Vinyl siding is a common material found on the outside of homes. It’s a plastic-based siding material that is normally installed on small apartment buildings and single-family homes.

Homeowners mostly like this vinyl siding because it is cheap to purchase and quick to install. Plus, it’s like an imitation wood on the surface to provide a more natural look, even though it is anything but natural.

But did you know there is an even better solution that is cheaper to purchase and quicker to install?

I am talking here about – Rhino Shield House Paint.

Here in this article, I will discuss this product, how it works, the costs associated, and why you should consider it for your home.

What's Covered in the Article:

What is Rhino Shield?

Rhino Shield, a product of Georgia Coatings, is a ceramic elastomeric coating that you can apply to the exterior of a house. Unlike traditional housepaint (which usually contains 60 percent water and some clay additives), it is made with 80 percent ceramic solids. Although it looks like paint, Rhino Shield is not really a type of paint.

The two main ingredients of Rhino Shield are urethane resins and elastomeric acrylic resins, which make the coating around 10 times thicker when dried. In fact, a combination creates a very thick and tough coating solution that does not crack due to its flexibility.

It doesn’t matter what material your home is made from. Rhino Shield can be applied to brick, wood, stucco, metal, or concrete walls without any hassle. You can even repair/replace rotten wood and get the ceramic coating of Rhino Shield applied for a more durable and long-lasting solution.

How does it work?

Rhino Shield can only be applied to outside surfaces, and it is not meant for indoor surfaces. The procedure to apply it is as follows:

Step 1- First, you must prepare the exterior wall surface by cleaning and removing all the dirt and debris.

Step 2- Next, apply the waterproof primer coat to the wall surface. It’s formulated with a bonding agent to help the ceramic paint stick to it and seal tiny cracks in the siding. If you don’t apply the primer, the paint coat won’t stick well.

Step 3- Lastly, apply two coats of Rhino Shield Home Paint (ceramic paint) to the wall surface.

A professional paint spraying equipment or a paint roller should cover most of the exterior, but you may need a paintbrush to reach smaller and narrower areas of the siding.

And if you want, you can even paint over RhinoShield with a durable finish coat or a semitransparent stain.

How Much Does Rhino Shield Cost?

On average, a Rhino Shield ceramic coating costs around $12,000 to $18,000 to entirely cover an average family house in the United States.

Generally, it is two to three times more than a regular latex paint coat. But because you do not have to replace the chipping, peeling, and cracking paint for 25 years, it’s a true saving for you in the long term.

A few common reasons why Rhino shield coating costs more than traditional house paint are:

  • It’s highly durable
  • It’s 5 to 10 times thicker
  • It does not use traditional fillers
  • It can be applied over a primer/sealer

But, since it can last for as long as five regular paint jobs, you will spend far less on hiring painters every season.

Pls. Note: The cost mentioned above is only a rough estimation. It may vary based on the specific need and per square foot area of your home or business place. I recommend you call your nearest local dealer for an exact price quote and further guidance.

Alternatives to Rhino Shield Coatings

If you still want to compare and save money on the application, you can go for alternatives like Liquid Ceramic® and Sherwin-Williams Liquid Ceramic Paint. Depending on your location, you may get them at a lower price.

Again the biggest selling point of these ceramic paint coatings for the exterior of houses is their exceptional durability. These can last anywhere from 10 to 25 years, which is much more than traditional exterior paint, usually between 5 and 7 years.

The formulation can be applied using a regular brush or roller. But that doesn’t mean you can do that quickly. The proper preparation and tools are the keys to getting a long-lasting finish on exteriors with liquid ceramic paint.

  1. Start by scraping the old cracked layer of paint on your exterior walls.
  2. Fill any cracks, holes, or dents with premium quality caulking – use a putty knife to even out the surface.
  3. Wash the area with a power washer and let it dry completely before applying the paint.
  4. If you’re painting over a glossy surface, sand it lightly for better liquid ceramic paint adhesion.
  5. Use a 2-inch synthetic brush or lint-free foam roller to apply the paint in an even layer.
  6. Let the first coat dry completely before applying the second coat.
  7. You can also use a pump sprayer to apply the ceramic paint coating if you’re working on a large surface area.

Benefits of Rhino Shield Over Vinyl Siding

Personally, I feel that Rhino Shield paint is a great choice for most homeowners who are looking for an excellent coating for overall protection.

In fact, there are at least seven benefits to using Rhino Shield over the vinyl siding; I can find out. These are as follows:

1) Not Flammable

Did you know that vinyl siding is a highly flammable material? If you have a house covered in vinyl siding, it won’t be hard for it to catch on fire under the right circ*mstances.

On the other hand, if you choose to paint the exterior of your home with Rhino Shield, you would be using a non-flammable paint solution. Hence reducing the risk of an accidental fire starting outside your home.

2) Easy to Apply

Rhino Shield can be applied to your exterior wall surface like ordinary paint. You don’t need any special equipment or tools to use it – just have a paint roller and tray.

With that said, make sure that you do not apply the Rhino Shield system yourself. It’s not to be done in a DIY way. You must have it installed by a Rhino Shield dealer applicator correctly.

Vinyl siding, on the other hand, requires a much more elaborate installation process that will cost you more time and money.

3) Available in Many Color Choices

Rhino Shield has more than 1,500 colors available to choose from.

Also, the ceramic coating can be tinted to any color you wish simply by using high-grade paint tints. This also means that you can also recoat it later if you wish to change the color or to get a more durable finish.

The great thing is that these colors won’t fade under the sunlight like regular house paints – they are formulated to be resistant to the sun’s dangerous UV rays and will remain bright and vibrant on the outside of your home for many years to come.

Vinyl siding has thousands of color choices too, but they don’t have protection from fading underneath the sunlight.

4) Less Maintenance Needed

Homeowners have always loved vinyl siding because it does not require much ongoing maintenance after the application. You can simply perform an annual cleaning and maintenance task per the instructions provided by your local dealer.

However, the big problem with vinyl is that it can still incur moisture and insect damage. If moisture or insects were to get trapped inside the boards, it would cause a big problem for the siding.

Since Rhino Shield is merely a kind of very thick paint coating, it goes right on the base material of the exterior. There is no way for moisture or bugs to get trapped because there are no spaces for them available.

Because of this, you’ll have a reduced chance of seeing any water damage, mold damage, or rot on your siding after applying Rhino Shield.

5) More Affordable

Rhino Shield is more affordable to install than vinyl siding. And that is why modern-day homeowners, builders, businesses, as well as historical buildings, appreciate installing them. In addition, you won’t have as many repair costs to worry about with Rhino Shield.

On the flip side, several preparatory steps go into a vinyl siding installation. The cost of these preparations will significantly exceed the cost of preparing the Rhino Shield paint application process. The worst-case scenario is that you’d have to repaint certain areas of your surface even after applying the vinyl siding.

Compared to Rhino Shield, vinyl siding usually requires more frequent and elaborate repairs, which cost more money.

6) Environmentally Friendly

Some health experts claim that vinyl siding has carcinogens, which increase the chances of cancer development in humans. But whether this is true or not, vinyl siding is still comprised of dangerous toxins and chemicals that are bad for the environment.

Even worse, when vinyl siding is burned, it emits hazardous toxins into the air, such as dioxin.

You will be happy to know that Rhino Shield does not contain any dangerous toxins or chemicals. It also includes an insulator ingredient to help trap air inside your home.

You should notice your air conditioning or heating bill gets reduced because of it. That is another way you will help the environment.

7) Water and Mold Resistant

One of the most important things you can do for your home is to preserve its siding and keep it strong.

Rhino Shield exterior ceramic coating is both water-resistant and mold-resistant, which means you won’t need to worry about rain and humidity deteriorating the siding material of your home.

Vinyl siding is not resistant to water or mold. As indicated above, these elements can get trapped within the spaces between the siding boards.

Since Rhino Shield doesn’t have these spaces, it is resistant to water and mold. Hence it’s also highly durable compared to other traditional exteriorpaints.

Besides all the seven benefits, Rhino Shield offers you a transferable, non-pro-rated warranty which simply means that you can transfer the 25-year warranty (provided to you) to the next owner. This also helps in increasing the resale value of your property.

Are There Any Drawbacks?

Compared to the pros, there are no significant cons, but I should mention them as well.

First of all, the Rhino Shield ceramic coat is for exterior walls only. This means you should not use it for interior walls or roofs.

Also, remember that Rhino Shield ceramic coating is not designed to prevent rust. If you have a surface that is rusted, you can instead use their rust inhibitor primer along with Rhino Shield ceramic coating for protection and rustproofing.

The second biggest Rhino Shield problem is since it’s not a DIY product, you should not apply the coating yourself. Instead, contact a professional to get it installed correctly.

Rhino shield paint is also not a suitable option for wood, pool decks, boats, vehicles, or other moving objects. If you want, the brand offers many other industrial lines of products that can be used in such cases.

Can Rhino Shield Be Used on Vinyl Siding?

Not all the paints that are designed for the exterior are suitable to use on vinyl siding. Since the vinyl material can expand and contract with heat, the paint may usually chip with changing temperatures.

Rhino Shield’s ceramic paint coating, on the other hand, is designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions easily. This also does not have much effect on changing seasons.

Due to this feature, Rhino Shield paint coating usually seals and bonds to vinyl siding entirely without any damage in the long run. Plus, it is backed with 25 years of warranty which the independent Rhino Shield dealer in your area generally issues.

Depending on the gauge, location, and other factors, you must select the right color. It’s often recommended that you go with the lighter shades as using darker colors can cause issues like buckling or warping of the siding due to sun exposure.

Rhino Shield vs. Vinyl Siding: What to Choose and Why?

When choosing between Rhino Shield and Vinyl siding materials, you should know that liquid vinyl siding is outdated with too many negative attributes. In fact, it’s highly flammable, more expensive, and requires more maintenance.

As for Rhino Shield, it is non-flammable, affordable, and requires less maintenance. It also maintains a smoother and more vibrant appearance for a longer time.

Therefore, you should consider purchasing a Rhino Shield for the exterior of your home in place of vinyl siding and many other products like Coolwall, Turtle Coat, or Sherwin Williams coatings.

IMO, it is an investment that will not only help your home look better but it will also help preserve the siding material.

Don’t trust me? Well, Rhino Shield ceramic coatingreviews also say it works great and looks just like regular paint.

If you are planning to buy Rhino Shield paint online, you can check for your nearest dealer here. When appropriately applied by expert painters, you can maximize the beauty of your home & the life of the coating even more.
