Summer Sessions at Appalachian (2024)

We will begin processing financial aid for Summer 2024 in mid-April.

For information about Summer Sessions please visit the Registrar's site athttp://summersessions.appstate.edu/.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS about Summer Financial Aid:

  • You must submit a 2023-24FAFSAwith Appalachian's school code (002906) in order to be considered for summer aid.
    • If you already have a FAFSA on file, we will use your existing application. No need to complete it again!
  • In order to be eligible for summer financial aid, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.
    • You can split up the 6 hours any way you like - 3 in each summer session or 6 in one session and 0 in the other!
    • All courses must be registered by the Summer Session I drop-add date (May 29, 2024), even if the courses do not begin until Summer Session II.
  • For financial aid purposes, summer sessions are considered 'trailers' – the last term of the academic year. This means that the financial aid you received in the Fall and Spring semesters of the academic year, may influence your eligibility for summer aid. (For example, if you used all of your federal loan eligibility in the fall and spring semesters, you will not have a federal loan offer available for summer)

Summer aid eligibility will be evaluated based on actual summer enrollment for 2024. We will begin reviewing enrollment and evaluating eligibility during the early registration period. Most financial aid requires a minimum of 6 credit hours of enrollment for eligibility. During the summer, those hours can either be divided into 3 credit hours per session or 6 credit hours in one session.

It is important to note that May 29ths the last day to add classes for ALL summer sessions to be considered for financial aid eligibility. If you have not filed your 2023-24 FAFSA, there is still time to complete an application at studentaid.gov.

Summer Pell Grant Eligibility

There are two situations in which a student may receive Pell Grant for Summer:

  1. Residual eligibility.

    1. When a student does not receive 100% of their eligible Pell Grant funding during the fall and/or spring terms, they may receive the remainder of their eligibility when enrolled during the summer term.

    2. Depending on the student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the student may qualify at less than half time enrollment during the summer (less than 6 Credit Hours of enrollment).

    3. Residual eligibility results from not enrolling in a fall or spring term, or when the student is not enrolled full time in a fall and/or spring term.

  2. 150% Pell Grant Availability

    1. Students who utilize 100% of their Pell Grant eligibility during the fall and spring terms may receive additional Pell funding for summer, up to an additional 50%.

  • Students MUST enroll, and begin attendance, in at least 6 credit hours of coursework during the summer term to qualify.
  • At Appalachian, the enrollment can be split across the summer sessions, but must equal or exceed 6 credit hours.

Your eligibility for the Pell grant will be determined once you have enrolled for summer classes. If you adjust your enrollment after you have been awarded, your eligibility status may change and your Pell Grant will be updated accordingly.

Summer State Grant Eligibility

Our office has been notified by the state grant agency that there is a limited amount of the Next NC Scholarship funds available for the upcoming summer sessions. The awarding criteria are very specific and are intended to help eligible students earn 30+ credit hours during the 2023-2024 academic year (Fall 2023, Spring 2024, and the Summer 2024 terms).

To be eligible for the Next NC Scholarship during the summer terms, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Have received the NC Scholarship for both semesters (Fall 2023 and Spring 2024)

  2. Be making Satisfactory Academic Progress

  3. Enroll in courses required for your program of study

  4. Have earned at least 24 hours but less than 30 hours during the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 terms. Your hour calculation will be based on your total hours earned during the Fall term and your attempted hours during the Spring term.

  5. The summer enrollment hours must take you to a minimum of 30 total hours for the year or complete the requirements for graduation at the end of the summer terms.

We anticipate the awards will be between $250 and $1,000 (depending on enrollment). Please understand that this is a projected amount and it could change based on funding and the number of eligible applicants after pre-registration ends.

The funds are limited and will be disbursed on a first-come-first-served basis. Priority will be given to eligible students who register between April 1 and April 15th.

Summer Appalachian College Opportunity Grants (ACOG)

Eligible students will be awarded according to their registration date. To be considered, students must be enrolled in at least one hour during the first summer session, have an EFC of 8000 or less, and be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for an award. Grants are only awarded during the first summer session.

Summer Federal Direct Loan Eligibility

If you have enrolled for summer classes, you will be able to see your potential remaining loan eligibility at the following link: Summer 2024 Federal Loan Eligibility.

If you are a dependent student and your parent would like to apply for a Federal Direct PLUS loan for the summer term, please instruct your parent to visit studentaid.gov and submit an application.

If you are a Graduate student and would like to apply for a Federal Direct Grad PLUS Loan, please visit studentaid.gov and submit an application.

Please note that you must enroll in at least 6 credit hours for the Summer term in order to be eligible for Federal loans. Remember May 29th is the last day to add classes for ALL summer sessions to be considered for financial aid eligibility.
